Game of Thrones fans are used to long waits but thankfully, House of the Dragon is here. It premiered at 21:00 ET (18:00 PT) on August 21 and there’ll be 10 episodes, all in all, airing every Sunday. This show will adapt author George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, diving into the history of the fallen house Targaryen and explaining how its situation became so dire at the beginning of Game of Thrones. Interested? Great! We’re about to explain how to stream House of Dragon online, even if you’re traveling and won’t have access to your home services.
We strongly suggest using official sources. These offer the best-possible video quality, the most reliable streams, and the ability to watch without worrying about being served a copyright infringement notice. Better still, almost every service showing House of the Dragon offers a trial, so if you can wait a couple of months, you’ll be able to stream the entire series for free.
This show will only be available on geo-restricted streaming services. As such, you’ll need a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to use your regular streaming services from abroad.
How to stream House of the Dragon online from abroad
A VPN’s primary job is to increase your digital privacy. They do this by encrypting all traffic from your device, preventing it from being read by snoopers. However, VPNs are also able to spoof your location, which is very useful for international travelers who like to stream.
Here’s how to stream House of the Dragon online from abroad:
- The first step is to choose a reputable VPN provider. We recommend NordVPN but Surfshark and ExpressVPN are two fantastic alternatives
- Next, install the VPN app onto whichever devices you use for streaming services. It’s fine if there are a few since most providers allow up to five connections at a time
- Log in and select a server in your home country. This changes your IP address, tricking the sites you visit into thinking that you’re still back home
- Now just stream House of the Dragon like you usually would. If you’re still having problems, clear your cookies and try again. Alternatively, switch servers or get in touch with your VPN’s support team
Important: if you’re planning on streaming House of the Dragon live, it’s a good idea to make sure your VPN works with your preferred streaming service ahead of time. Luckily, all of the providers above include free 24/7 support over live chat, making it as easy as possible to resolve any issues.

House of the Dragon will air simultaneously on HBO and HBO Max. If your YouTube TV subscription or Hulu with Live TV subscription includes HBO, you can sign into the appropriate website to stream new episodes live. Cable subscribers will be able to stream them on-demand via the HBO website shortly after they finish.
For most people, HBO Max is the easiest way to watch. This service charges $9.99 per month for an ad-supported experience or $14.99 to watch without ads. You’ll also be able to catch up on all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, which is a huge plus.
HBO services are geo-blocked and change their content based on your location. To regain access to the US content library, just use an American VPN server. NordVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, meaning you can try it risk-free. If you’re unimpressed, just cancel within 30 days to receive a full refund.
Where else can I watch House of the Dragon online?
It’s no surprise that House of the Dragon will be released almost simultaneously across the major English-speaking countries. After all, Game of Thrones was one of the decade’s biggest titles and remains the most pirated show of all time. Here’s how to stream HotD where you are:
Canada
Canadian fans can stream House of the Dragon on Crave from August 21. A Crave Total plan costs $19.99 CAD per month and lets you watch in the highest possible quality, though $9.99 per month plans are available too for people who just want to watch on mobile devices. Need to get caught up? Crave currently has all eight seasons of Game of Thrones as well.
Crave is only normally available in Canada. Despite this, you can access it while traveling by using a VPN.
UK
Sky Atlantic will be showing House of the Dragon in the UK. If you’re already a Sky TV customer, you can watch online using the Sky Go app. Otherwise, you’ll need a Now TV account with an Entertainment Pass. These are £9.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. On the plus side, Now TV has every episode of Game of Thrones too, so you’ll be able to refresh your memory between episodes.
These services are both region-locked. British users traveling abroad can regain access by connecting to one of their VPN’s UK-based servers.
Australia
Australians are often the last to get the hottest shows of the year but thankfully that’s not the case this time. In fact, House of the Dragon will air at 11:00 AEST every Monday, starting August 22 – that’s the day after it’s shown in the US! This show will be exclusively available on Binge, which has plans starting at $10 AUD per month. Naturally, Binge carries Game of Thrones as well.
Binge won’t usually work outside of Australia. However, if you connect to an Australian VPN server, you should be able to use it from anywhere.
What is House of the Dragon about?
Based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones with events taking place some two centuries prior. The book is a history of the Targaryen family with the show focusing particularly on events following the reign of King Jaehaeyrs I Targaryen.
With House Targaryen at the peak of its powers, King Viserys I Targaryen breaks with tradition and names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir to the Iron Throne. What follows is the buildup to the Targaryen civil war of succession known as “Dance of the Dragons”, a war fought by King Viserys Targaryen’s own children, and one which divided Westeros and ultimately brought about the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty.
What can we expect from House of the Dragon?
The official House of the Dragon trailer gives us a pretty good idea of what’s coming in season one. Essentially, fans can look forward to an adaptation of The Princess and the Queen, from GRRM’s Fire and Blood. This tells the story of a war of succession after Viserys (the original, not Daeneryes’ brother) dies, with Prince Aegon usurping the throne of the rightful heir, Rhaenyra.
Do I need to have seen Game of Thrones to watch House of the Dragon?
Not really. House of the Dragon is set almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and has an entirely new cast of characters. That said, long-time fans will be able to see characters and events firsthand that were only mentioned offhandedly in the main series (such as Aegon III and the Dance of the Dragons).
