Walking and running are said to be one of the best exercises to stay fit and healthy. It is said that a person who walks up to 10,000 steps a day is healthy and fit.

With advanced technology and amazing gadgets, we can count steps that we took an entire day.  One such wearable is the Apple Watch.

In this post, we have listed how to Count your steps with Apple Watch accurately.

Let’s see what needs to be done!

Step 1: Enter Health Data:

The first thing that you need to do is enter data related to you in the Health app. You need to enter your height, age, gender and weight which help to evaluate steps taken and calories burnt.

Let’s know how it’s done!

  • Unlock your iPhone and locate Watch app. Look for My Watch tab and select Health and tap Edit. Fill in the information required and select Done.
  • The information entered in Health app will be shared with Activity and Workout apps.

Step 2: Activate Location services

Apple Watch needs GPS tracking to estimate the distance traveled by you. No matter which Apple Watch gen you are using, if you want to get accurate results on counting steps, you need to activate location services.

  • Locate Settings on the home screen.

  • Then navigate to Privacy, then Location Services.

  • Check whether the location services is turned on.

  • Make sure you also enable location services for Apple Watch Workout and Watch Faces. Set them both from off to on while using the app.

Step 3: Activate fitness tracking

Now when you have turned on Location services, let’s proceed further.

Apple Watch & iPhone use an accelerometer to measure full body movement to track an activity. When GPS info is unavailable, the accelerometer will do the work. Settings for both phone and watch are different.

iPhone:

  • Launch the Settings app.

  • Navigate to Privacy and then Location Services.

  • You will get a list of Services, locate System Services and tap on it.

  • Check whether Motion Calibration & Distance is turned on.

  • Now go back to Privacy, then Motion & Fitness. Turn on Fitness Tracking & Health, in case they are not activated already.

Watch:

  • Now go to Watch App on iPhone.
  • Click My Watch Tab and select Privacy.
  • Check whether Fitness Tracking is on.

Adjust To Get Accuracy:

If you have Apple Watch Series 1, you must know that it doesn’t come with GPS, that’s why it needs help to know how you run or walk. In this case, you can allow Watch to compare the accelerometer data with GPS data from your iPhone’s GPS data to get accurate results.

Steps for Calibration:

  • Wear your Apple Watch & take your iPhone with you and go to an area with clear skies and flat ground for better GPS reception.
  • Open Workout app on Apple Watch, select Outdoor Run or Outdoor Walk. Now set a time goal to 20 minutes.
  • Run or Walk at your normal speed for the set time period.
  • Also, add step counter to watch face.

Now that you know how to set your Apple Watch to count your steps accurately. Try it and keep a track on your steps and calories burnt with Apple Watch step counter.
