Windows 11 displays an “Open in Windows Terminal” option in the folder and desktop context menu. That is, the “Open in Windows Terminal” option, along with other options, appears when you right-click on the desktop or a folder anywhere on your computer.
The “Open in Windows Terminal” is helpful when you want to quickly open the Windows Terminal and navigate to a specific folder or desktop. But how many users use the Windows Terminal, or how often do PC users use the Windows Terminal?
If you are a typical PC user, the chances are that you do not need the “Open in Windows Terminal” option. Since you do not use the option, you might want to remove the “Open in Windows Terminal” option from the context menu.
Removing the “Open in Windows Terminal” is relatively easy. You need to make a small change to the Windows Registry to get rid of the entry. If you do not use the Windows Terminal at all, you can uninstall it to remove the “Open in Windows Terminal” entry.
This guide will show you how to remove the “Open in Windows Terminal” entry from the Windows 11 context menu.
Method 1 of 2
Remove “Open in Windows Terminal” from Windows 11 context menu
NOTE: We recommend creating a system restore point before editing the Registry so that you can restore your PC if anything goes wrong.
Step 1: Open the Registry Editor by typing Registry Editor in the search and pressing the Enter key.
Click on the Yes button when you get the User Account Control prompt.
Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions
Step 3: Right-click on the Shell Extensions key, click New and click Key. Name it as Blocked.
Step 4: Now, select the Blocked key in the left pane.
Step 5: On the right side, perform a right-click, click New, select String Value and then name it as {9F156763-7844-4DC4-B2B1-901F640F5155}.
Step 6: That’s it! You may close the Registry Editor now. Restart your computer or restart the Windows Explorer process via the Task Manager to remove the “Open in Windows Terminal entry.”

Another way to remove “Open in Windows Terminal” from Windows 11 context menu
In this method, we are uninstalling the Windows Terminal app. So, use this method only if you do not use the Windows Terminal app.
Step 1: Go to Windows 11 Settings > Apps > Installed apps page.
Step 2: Click on the three vertical dots next to the Windows Terminal entry and click the Uninstall option.
Click on the Uninstall button again when you see the confirmation dialog.
Once the Windows Terminal app is uninstalled, the “Open in Windows Terminal” option will be automatically removed from the context menu. When you want the option or Terminal again, you can get the same from the Windows Store.
Enable the “Open in Windows Terminal” option in Windows 11
Step 1: Open the Registry Editor using search. Go to the following key:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked
Step 2: On the right side, perform a right-click on the {9F156763-7844-4DC4-B2B1-901F640F5155} String value and then click the Delete option to delete the value.
Step 3: Reboot your PC once or restart the Windows Explorer process via the Task Manager.
