There is a built-in screen recording tool in Windows 10, but it can only record games and apps. That is, it cannot record some areas of the operating system such as the desktop and File Explorer.
Plenty of free and commercial programs around to record your Windows 10 desktop and other areas of the operating system. While most of the screen recording tools do their job well and are easy-to-use, why install an additional software when you can use one of the installed software to record your Windows 10 PC’s screen?
VLC Media Player, the popular multimedia player that you can find almost on all PCs, can help you record your Windows 10 desktop and other areas of the operating system. If VLC Media Player is already installed on your Windows 10 computer, you can record your computer’s screen with a few mouse clicks.
Since VLC Media Player is a multimedia player, it lacks some of the advanced settings that you may find in dedicated screen recording software. Keep in mind that it will not allow you to grab only a select portion of the screen and add annotations to the video. That said, if you occasionally need to record the screen on your Windows 10 PC, give VLC Media Player a try.
Use VLC Media Player to record Windows 10 screen
By default, VLC Media Player saves screen recording files in .MP4 format.
In this guide, we will see how to use the VLC Media Player to record Windows 10 screen.
Step 1: Launch the VLC Media Player. If it’s not on your PC, download the setup file from the official website and then install the same.
Step 2: Click the Media menu and then click Convert/Save option.
Step 3: Switch to the Capture device tab. Under the Capture mode section, select the Capture mode as Desktop, and then select the frame rate at which you wish to record the screen. We advise you to keep it anywhere between 5 to 15 for decent quality capture.
Step 4: Click Convert/Save button to open Convert dialog.
Step 5: In the Convert dialog, in the Destination file section, click the Browse button, choose a location to save the screen recording, type a name for the file, and then click the Save button.
VLC will start recording the screen now. It will record anything and everything on the screen. It’s worth noting that you will not see any indications on the screen when VLC is recording your screen.
Step 6: Finally, when you want to stop the recording, click the Stop button on the VLC Media Player to stop the recording and save the file.
You may now open the recorded video file with VLC Media Player or any other video player to watch the screen recording.
