Today, modern technology in the realm of television is astounding. We are now given so many channels with perfect colored pictures that we could not watch them all in one day if we tried, yet, we want more. We want to jailbreak our Smart TVs to get ALL the channels, and so our TVs can double as computers.
If you have a Samsung TV, that want can soon become your reality by following a few simple steps laid out clearly in the proceeding sections. In a matter of mere moments, your need for virtually all technology will be at your remote-controlled fingertips.
Jailbreaking a Samsung TV
There are several steps to jailbreaking a Samsung TV, including:
- Entering your default pin Choosing a language preference Choosing a channel typeProviding another passcodeUpdating your television
Check the Firmware
Before you begin the process of jailbreaking your Samsung TV, you need to make sure that you have a couple of things in check first. To root the TV, you need to ensure that it is powered by an ARM processor with firmware <=1018.0, which is a smaller version of a processor than you would find in a computer. Other necessities include:
- A Samsung SDK (Software Development Kit). This will be necessary for the area of programming.GIT – “a free and open-source distributed version control system.”A toolchain – a set of software tools used in conjunction to complete a development task.XBMC – Xbox Media Center
You have each of those items in place. Are you ready for a jailbreak?
Enter the Pin
With your Smart TV on, go to “Settings” on the remote, and then opt for “Setup Options.” You will then be prompted to enter a PIN code. Typically, you will be able to find a default PIN code by searching online. The first one you should try is “0000.”
Time for Some Formalities
Next up, you will be asked to select your language preference for your TV. The correct language could automatically appear after you’ve entered an accepted PIN code. This will be followed by a question as to the country in which you reside.
Now that you have completed the formalities, the business part begins.
Follow the First Prompt
The following prompt you will see will say “Auto Tuning,” and you will choose the “Channel Type” option, followed by “Digital.”
Once your TV is in the Auto Tuning process, you can take a breath while the TV does its thing. When the Auto Tuning process is complete, click “Next.” If you are prompted to do another Auto Tune, simply select “No,” stopping the process and readying you for the next step.
Provide a Passcode
You will now be asked for your “Internet Service Location.” You will find and select yours. Next, select “Aerial Option” and “Next.” Then, you will be asked for a passcode that you will enter, and we then move to the final step.
Update the Television
The last step in the process is to click “Update Now,” then wait. Once it has finished updating, allow the TV to rest when you are asked if it can power down. Once you turn the power back on, the updates will be applied to your brand new, jailbroken Samsung Smart TV.
If, for some reason, you are not prompted to shut the TV down, then something was missed along the way, so repeat the process.
After Jailbreaking
There are several schools of thought on this issue, and as with most controversy, there is never a clear-cut black and white. Your feels concerning your TV’s newfound freedom may be all over the place, and that’s ok. We will look at both sides of the issue, and hopefully, you will determine where you stand before jailbreaking your TV.
The Advantages to a Jailbroken TV
Many consumers believe that if you have purchased a product in earnest, you should be given full access to anything that it offers.
Jailbreaking your television does just that. It will provide you with full access to both the Television and computer parts of your Smart TV, granting you access to virtually all channels in the universe, any app you can dream of, and the ability to surf the net on the big screen. The cost to you? Zero.
Jailbreaking Negatives
Does “jailbreaking” SOUND like a good thing to do? Ever? Many believe that it is not. First of all, it is technically illegal. Secondly, when you open up all of the access on the Smart TV, you leave yourself open to being hacked MUCH easier than before.
For many, free access to the multitudes of extras trumps the legalities and the risks associated with jailbreaking their TV. You will have to make that decision yourself and hope that there are no adverse effects if you opt to jailbreak.
