VPNs allow you to bypass regional restrictions. By connecting to a server in another country, you can change your IP address and use services that are only normally available in specific parts of the world. This means that you can use a VPN to get a Romanian IP address and browse the internet as though you were actually in Romania, regardless of your real location. Using a VPN also has the benefit of keeping your information secure.

Contrary to popular belief, your online activities aren’t private. In fact, the number of organizations that can monitor you is larger than you might think: it includes your Internet Service Provider (ISP), employer, university network administrators, and even government agencies. VPNs prevent this by encrypting your traffic, making it inaccessible to any third-party snoopers.

PrivateVPN is a service based in Sweden that was originally backed by activists who support people’s rights to torrent. True to its name, the service has a solid no logs policy, robust 256-bit encryption (OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols), and plenty of advanced features. This includes apps for all popular platforms that come with a kill-switch, DNS leak protection, and obfuscation.

Servers are located in 60+ countries, and while it only has around 200 in total they are bare-metal and completely controlled by the provider. They also provide excellent speeds for streaming, and this is one of the few VPNs that manages to provide secure access to around 20 different Netflix regions. The good news is that it also has servers in Bukarest, to let you get a Romanian IP address when you need one.

Perhaps the only real drawback is that this VPN’s live chat is only available between 18 and 22 hours per day. That said, you can drop them an email outside of these hours and they will get back to you quickly. You can also test the service yourself using its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Can’t I just use a free VPN to get a Romania IP address instead?

Free VPNs can be an attractive prospect but they actually come with several major disadvantages that prevent us from recommending them. The most noticeable difference is speed: free services usually have fairly limited networks yet more users than the majority of paid VPNs. This causes major network slowdown, which manifests as slow browsing speeds and videos that pause frequently to buffer, if they load at all. Free VPNs are usually the first to be blacklisted by copyright holders, too, so you may not be able to access your chosen site.

You might ask yourself how a free VPN can afford to exist. Since users don’t pay the company directly, these services find other ways to create profit. Often, they’ll sell ad space or offer increased speeds for a monthly fee, but the problem is that some go even further. By storing tracking cookies on your device, these companies can gather data about how you use the internet. This can then be sold to advertisers later, most commonly, without your knowledge.

It can be difficult to even find a safe, free VPN. In the past, we’ve seen a major provider sell idle user bandwidth to help run a botnet. Unfortunately, when well-known VPNs resort to shady business tactics, it seems smaller services are more inclined to act the same way; recent analysis of over 280 free VPN apps showed that almost 40% contained malware, while 18% used no encryption, and over 80% were vulnerable to IPv6 leaks.

To keep yourself and your personal information safe, we recommend using a reputable VPN with a history of standing up for its users’ privacy instead of a free service.

Can I watch Romanian TV abroad with a VPN?

Most geo-blocked services examine the user’s IP address to see if they’re in a specific country or not. Connecting to a VPN server automatically gives you a new, country-specific IP address, meaning that a Romanian server allows you to browse the internet and stream content from platforms like ProTV, TVR, and Digi24 as though you were actually there.

You’ll find that some platforms have more advanced geo-blocking measures than others. They might use your phone’s GPS or browser’s location data to double-check. You might also be required to provide a local address, phone number, or payment method when you sign up. If you normally live in Romania, you may still be able to sign up from abroad, but otherwise, these services will be very difficult if not impossible to register for.

What else can I use a Romanian IP address for?

Automated anti-fraud alerts are becoming more common. Usually, these are triggered when a system detects that you’ve logged in (or attempted to) from a different country. While designed with good intentions, these measures also mean that when traveling, you could find yourself unable to access your account until you verify your identity. You can greatly reduce the likelihood of this happening by connecting to a VPN server in your home country first.

Public wifi networks are convenient but rarely as secure as they should be. There’s no way of knowing who’s monitoring your activities, and public networks are prime spots for hackers to lie in wait. Further, certain websites might be inaccessible via certain networks. VPNs not only allow you to prevent monitoring, but they also let you browse the internet freely, even in countries with strict online censorship.

Getting a Romanian IP address: Your questions answered

Now, using a VPN to watch content that’s normally inaccessible where you are is almost always against a streaming platform’s terms of service. All the same, even if it detects you’re connected to a VPN (which is far from guaranteed), you’ll usually just be made to turn it off before you can stream anything.
