Is your Windows 10 PC booting very slowly? Want to find out programs that are slowing down your Windows 10 boot? Want to speed up your Windows 10 PC’s boot time? In this guide, we will see how to find out programs that are slowing down your Windows 10 boot time.

Programs and apps that are configured to load along with Windows 10 can significantly slow down Windows 10 boot process. Many programs automatically configure themselves to load with Windows. For instance, Microsoft OneDrive automatically starts with Windows.

When you turn on your PC, Windows loads your desktop, desktop icons, tens of services and system processes, and programs that are configured to automatically start with Windows.

Every startup program increases the boot time of your Windows 10 PC. While some programs have minimal impact on the boot time, some programs significantly slow down the boot.

If you have tens of programs starting with Windows 10, disabling all of them just to speed up the boot time doesn’t make sense. Finding out programs that have a high impact on the boot process and disabling them is the best way to speed up the boot.

Luckily, Windows 10 helps you easily find out the impact of a program on the boot. In fact, you can even find out the CPU activity during the startup of a program and disable only those programs that are causing high CPU usage.

IMPORTANT: While it’s safe to disable most of the startup programs, disabling crucial programs may not a good idea. For instance, if you disable the OneDrive, OneDrive might not be able to sync in the background. You will have to manually open the program after booting into Windows.

Follow the instructions given below to find out programs slowing down your Windows 10 boot process and disable them.

Find out programs slowing down Windows 10 boot time

Step 1: Open Task Manager. There are many ways to open it. Using Ctrl + Shift + Esc is the easiest way.

Step 2: If you don’t get the full version of the Task Manager, click More details button to see the full version.

Step 3: Switch to the Startup tab by clicking on the same. As you can see in the picture below, the tab lists all programs that are loading with Windows 10. By default, the Startup tab displays name of the startup program, publisher name, status of the program, and startup impact of the program.

Step 4: We advise you disable programs that have a high impact or low impact on the boot. You can ignore low and medium impact programs. That said, disable unwanted programs even if they have a low impact on the boot.

To know the CPU activity and disk activity of programs at startup, right-click on one of the tabs and then click CPU at startup and Disk I/O at startup options. If the CPU activity of a program is more than 300 ms, it makes sense to disable the program (right-click on it and then click Disable) unless you want the program to start with Windows 10.

If you are not sure about a program, simply right-click on it and then click Search online option to know about the program. Disabling antivirus and other security programs is not advisable.

If you get any error or come across any other issues after removing a program startup, you can enable the same again by right-clicking on it (Task Manager > Startup) and then clicking Enable option.
